Pay Teachers Good Salaries-Former NUT Official

The government and private school owners have been advised to  motivate teachers with attractive salaries.

This advice was given by  a former official of  the Oyo state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT),Comrade Olu Abiala on Thursday during the 2023 World Teachers' Day celebration organized by the NUT in badan, Oyo state, Nigeria.

''Public and private school owners need to invest more in teachers' wages and salaries to motivate  teachers to give their best for the development of Nigeria tomorrow. The vision of growth  and development within the time-frame can only  be achieved in Nigeria with the appropriate manpower, and in adequate quantity and quality. Only sincere commitment to investment in the teachers, today in terms of a comprehensive welfare package, can make that dream come true tomorrow.''

In his remarks, the chairman of the union in the state, Comrade Raji Oladimeji  called on the state government to urgently address the issue of shortage of teachers in primary schools in the state.

Revive Moribund Health Facilities-NASU to Fed. Ministry of Health

The Minister of Health has been advised  to ensure the renovation and rehabilitation of obsolete and moribund health facilities in government-owned hospitals  across the country.

This advice was given by a member of the National Executive Council(NEC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union and Associated Institutions(NASU), who doubles as the  branch chairman of the union at the  University College Hospital(UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria, Comrade Kehinde Abiona.

''The Minister of Health needs to look inwards and ensure that the moribund facilities that are the health sector are revived. Since the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration carried out the only major facility upgrade  in 2005, nothing has been done by successive administrations. It is almost about two decades since the major overhaul has been done.''

Comrade Abiona also called on the Minister to ignore  the agitation for the privatization  of government-owned hospitals saying, ''such agitation will not allow him to end up well.''

The NASU chairman maintained that the Minister should  remain  neutral in the affairs of the health sector workers, adding, ''he should not be a Minister of  Medical Doctors, but the Minister of all.''

Hold some members of management responsible for postponement of elections-NASUUCH chairman

Support Us

The Non-Academic Staff Union and Associated Institutions(NASU) has accused some members of the the management team of University College Hospital of deliberately facilitating the postponement of the union's elections.

The NASU made this accusation through its chairman Comrade Kehinde Abiona. ''Some elements in the management of the hospital had a hand in the postponement of the union's elections. We were supposed to have the delegates/departmental election on Wednesday 2nd August and the major elections on Thursday 3rd August, but the Chief Security Officer of the hospital met me and told me that the management had decided to put the elections on hold. Comrade Abiona picked holes in the letter written to the union by the management saying''there are a number of actions that have been taken without the knowledge of the Chief Medical Director.'' ''Heads of Departments do not have any role to play in the election of delegates in the departments. The majority of the HODs are not members of our union. They do not have any role to pay in the electoral process. Since they are not members, they should not influence the electoral process. The management directed that elections should be put on hold until further notice to allow for the implementation of the report of the technical committee established to look into the immediate and remote causes of the union's March 15 elections that were disrupted,'' Comrade Abiona stated.

See original image

Nigerians have been called upon to come  out in their large numbers on Saturday to exercise their voting rights.
This call was made on Tuesday by a Christian Cleric,Pastor Opeyemi Ajayi in Ibadan,Oyo state,Nigeria.
''Nigerians should not be afraid, come out, exercise patience, come out to vote, monitor your  votes  for the sustenance of DEMOCRACY in the Presidential elections. Those responsible for the ugly situation have been identified and they will be brought to justice,'' Pastor Ajayi stated.

In another development, the misappropriation and mismanagement of the resources-financial and otherwise-of the states has prompted labor leaders and their followers of trade unions to grab whatever is available from candidates for the next round of elections.
To this end, workers have formed groups for engagement with candidates, while labor leaders vigorously defend anti-people policies for pecuniary reasons.
In his reaction, the chairman of the Non-Academic Staff and other Associated     Institutions Union(NASU) University College Hospita(UCH)branch, Ibadan, Nigeria, Comrade Kehinde Abiona argued that he was not aware of the activities of some workers saying, '' the Governorship candidate has not even come to UCH talkless of having any deal with him. I am not aware of any NASU member that is on the campaign team  of the state Governor. NASU comprises different trade unions.''

Four Days to Polls-Nigerians are Hungry and Afraid-Oyo CSOs Representative

Election 4Hunger, fear and other forms of hardships now constitute the mindset of millions of Nigerians less than four days to the general elections.

This assertion was made on Monday by the representative of Civil Society Organizations(CSO), Hadjia Aisha Ismail, at an enlarged stakeholders meeting organized by the Oyo state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC)in Ibadan, Nigeria.

''People are hungry, people don't have what to eat, there is no fuel, they can't get anything from their neighbors, banks are not dispensing cash, Point of Sale(POS) shops are also not dispensing cash. The masses are afraid to come out, we have to go out to tell them not to be afraid to come out. We have told them that when there is trouble, they should go back home. Please, we don't want hooliganism. We must not vote for the wrong people in this election,'' Hadjia Ismail concluded.

In his remark, the Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC) in the state, Dr. Adeniran Tella expressed worries over the flashpoints in the state, saying, ''the security agencies have assured them of adequate security before, during and after the elections. All hands must be on deck to achieve successful elections.''

The representative of the Inter Party Advisory Council(IPAC), Pastor Biodun Popoola appealed to political parties to act within the ambits of the law, adding ''let us educate our members. I also appeal to our religious bodies to pray more this time for God's intervention.''

However, the meeting got rowdy when the issue of the actual figure of collected and uncollected Permanent Voters Cards(PVC) was raised by a political party representative.

The gathering dispersed when the organizers hurriedly brought the meeting to an end for another official engagement. No public holidays were set aside for Nigerians in Oyo state to collect their PVCs.

In another development, the spokesman of INEC in the state, Mr. Awolowo has disclosed that the registration for the accreditation for Journalists that will cover the general elections in the state has closed.

Overcrowding

The additional population which has brought about overcrowding in several communities in Oyo state, has resulted in evil, lawlessness, crime, criminality and evil in those communities. Who are those responsible for the overcrowding? Nigerians continue to ask.

NASU UCH Members Accuse leaders of engaging in Sharp Practices

-Allegations Baseless-chairman

Worried members of the Non Academic Staff and Associated Institutions Union(NASU), University College Hospital(UCH)branch,Ibadan, Nigeria have accused the executives of the union of promoting self-designed and self-centered interests to the detriment of the union.

The members, who spoke incognito, also lamented the lack of accountability and transparency on the part of the executives.

''The executives of our union have continued to channel the resources of our union to self-driven and self-centered projects and interests. They have been so smart about it, but we have detected the infractions. In addition, they hide under the name of the union to seek pecuniary benefits from politically exposed persons, whom everybody knows have had engagements with the union leaders.''

''And of great worry, is the fact that we, the members of NASU are not carried along in the scheme of the union's activities. There is the need for inclusiveness, accountability and transparency,'' the aggrieved members stated.

In his reaction on behalf of the union's executives, the chairman, Comrade Kehinde Abiona dismissed the allegations, describing them as concocted and baseless.

''The so-called resource diversion is alien to me because we run the union with the mindset of transparent leadership. This our great union is backed by a constitution which stipulates our functions and the terms of stewardship at the beginning and end of our tenure, which is four years and is renewable. There has never been any occasion during which the union's resources were diverted to private interests. Since we came on board on March 13, 2019, we have opened up the resources of the union for the overall benefit of all members.''

Comrade Abiona disclosed that the days of touts and hooligans in the union were gone for good, saying, '' we ensure that there is equality and fairness in the workplace. Anything concerning my members, I must be very interested in it. I am not here as a chairman on my own, there is the secretary and treasurer. Formerly, only the chairman, secretary and treasurer took major decisions, but when we mounted the saddle on March 13, 2019, we opened up the issue of finances, so the five ex-officio members of the union are always part of the decision-making process.

The NASU chairman maintained that the union gave members the opportunity to interface with politically exposed persons, who aspire to become policy makers, saying, ''is it now a crime for a trade union leader to receive and listen to potential leaders in society? Is it a crime for us to have organized a health workers' symposium last year? Our members need to be exposed to several issues. So, what happened is that we exercised our rights to ensure a balance between the leaders, potential leaders and our members. Our engagement with them was just in the interest of our members, nothing else. He attributed the allegation to the fast-approaching elections of the union in March, stressing, ''with the fear of God paramount in our hearts, we are ensuring that transparency is not defeated in our tenure.''

''By the special grace of God, all members of the executive are recontesting in the upcoming elections. The purpose of recontesting is to consolidate and to ensure that the well rebranded image of the union does not relapse to the inglorious days. Expect our score card soon, Comrade Abiona concluded.

Makeshift Shops Take over Residential areas in Oyo

Owners of various categories of shops-make shift and steel containers inclusive-now constitute the majority population in most communities in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria.

Most of these petty traders, who trade generally in second-hand and perishable items, are not residents of these communities and have become security threats.

Indeed, a sizable number of them-tradesmen, artisans, market men and women-were empowered by politically exposed personalities who hold public offices.

The personalitites who are desperate to remain in public offices, covertly support the criminal activities of these shop owners Not surprisingly, the crime rate in these communities, which include Olorunsogo, Molete, Molusi, Solanke, IMG Ibuko(the primary school is a den for criminals), Oyegbami, Oshodi, Aluko, Scout Camp, Felele, among others-has been on upsurge in recent times.

However, of worry is the continued threats to kill being issued by the shop owners, criminally minded residents, their children and wards.

This warning was issued by the association's chairman, Dr. Solomon Oulgbode in a chat with Federationews2day in Ibadan, Nigeria.

'' I implore all ACOMORAN members to be law abiding and orderly, they know where they are coming from. They must also ensure that they are not used as instruments by politicians but support the Oyo state Governor because that is what my members say and want. Since Oyo state has accommodated us, why won't we support the state Governor? We don't have factions in our association in Oyo state. Those parading themselves as executives of the association are impostors. We must support the state Governor because he did not push us into the labor market, Dr. Olugbode stated

We are United in Oyo state-Eze(Dr.)Anozie

Eze anozieClick here-Nigerians have been called upon to ignore enemies of destabilization attempting to divide Ndigbo in Oyo state.

This call was made by Ezeigbo, Ezechukwujiegosioluebube nala,Ibadan and Oyo state and Chairman Non-indigenous Traditional Heads, Oyo state, Eze(Dr.) Alex Anozie in a chat.

''Any person or persons working towards dividing us ,Ndigbo, the more, are not true friends of Ndigbo, and that may not be the final resolution of whatever misunderstanding they think we are having. As a matter of fact, we no longer have any misunderstandings, as the courts have been courageous enough to see the truth and ensure that justice prevails. Every lover of peace and Ndigbo should be courageous as well to tell those who have refused to obey the court judgments to simply obey them, to enable us sit as brothers we are and finally resolve the whole issue peacefully, all in the interest of peace in the state. These people have applied various destructive tricks in the past, all in their efforts to say no to what God has said yes, but all collapsed. Whatever they are doing again now to go against God's wish will surely collapse again,'' Eze(Dr.)Anozie stated.

Crime 3

Landlords and Tenants Associations, Crime and Criminality

Most communities in Oyo state among other states in Nigeria have been overwhelmed by criminals, a significant number of whom are residents.
These criminals take time to observe happenings in these communities from shops, beer parlors, hotels, and abandoned buildings in these communities after which they facilitate heinous and grievous crimes.
In Molusi, Solanke, Oeygbami, Oshodi, Olorunsogo, Barracks, Aluko, Felele, and several other communities in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, electricians, petty traders, barbers, commercial motorcycle operators, and mechanics and beer parlor operators secure accommodation for questionable characters, who no terrorize these communities.

Crime 4
Sadly, the Landlords and Tenants Associations in these communities know these criminals but overlook their criminal activities, perhaps because of the pecuniary benefits accruing to them. Although they ensure they facilitate the collection of night guards dues from residents with all vigor.
The outcome is the several unreported cases of crimes in these communities, while innocent residents continue to ponder over the constitutional roles of law enforcement agencies which seems to be non-existent

The Reign of Criminality and Impunity in Ibadan Communities

The relevant law enforcement agencies are well aware of the reign of crime and criminality at Molusi, Solanke, Oyegbami, Olorunsogo, Molete, Oshodi, Aluko, Scout camp, Felele and several other communities in Ibadan, Oyo state.

But probably due to the involvement of some of the law enforcement agents with the cultists who perpetrate heinous and grievous crimes, little or nothing has been done to reverse the worrisome situation. This is even as there as several unreported heart rendering cases.

Since the law enforcement agencies have the responsibility to ensure the safety of lives and property, the unending reign of terror by these cultists, who openly threaten to kill those who question their activities leaves much to be desired-  a point of reference is one '  Samba', a barber, whose barbing shop is among the block of shops located in front of a building at the Aluko/Barracks, Felele/Scout camp/Oshodi Street junction. He openly threatens to kill people while at the same time boasting of his connection with some officers and rank and file of the Police.

Indeed, owners of beer parlors, Ogogoro joints, hotels, and a sizable number of shops in these communities are ready accomplices of these cultists in these communities.

Cultists Posing as Okada Riders Terrorize Ibadan Residents

Cultists who pose as okada riders have continuously terrorized residents and commuters along the Molusi, Olorunsogo, Molete, Scout camp, Felele areas of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria.

The cultists led by one hoodlum, popularly known as Brother Bayo,an okada rider always on blue hooded top to shield his identity, a vulcanizer, and a spare parts seller, whose shops are at the ASAS bus stop junction of Molusi street, have their base at the ASAS bus-stop/Molusi street junction.

The criminals intimidate, threaten attack and dispossess unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables, at night, since there are no street lights in theses areas.

Expectedly, the residents and other members of the public are helpless, while the connivance of respected members of these communities with the hoodlums has greatly frustrated actions against them.

Sadly, the law enforcement agency saddled with the responsibility of ensuring sanity in this category of transportation focus on pecuniary interests at the expense of a safe society.

Defectors should retrace their steps before it is too late-Oyo PDP Chairman

Img 20200319 134254

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) in recent times have been advised to retrace their steps before it is too late.

This advice was given by the Chairman of the Oyo state chapter of the PDP, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha in a chat with Federationews2day.

''My advice is that our members  who still remain in the ruling party should come back now, if they don't come back now it may be too late for them. Things are changing, if we don't stand up to our duty, they will destroy the country.  Considering  what happened in Oyo state in the last election, we want it to go round the South West. They don't know how to run government. Almost all of us have resolved to come together to slavage the party'', Alhaji Mustapha stated.

Orita Aperin Market Fire : Only 8 Lock Up Plank Shops were affected-Oyo State Fire Service

FireThe Oyo State Fire Service has  declared that only 8 lock up shops made of plank at the Orita-Aperin Market were razed by the inferno that engulfed the market over the weekend.

A cross section of mainstream media had reported that the faulty truck of the state fire service negatively affected the inferno at the market.

The State Fire Service made this declaration through its Deputy Director, Mr. Moshood Adewuyi.

''It is a mis-statement for saying that the fire  service truck malfunctioned, in the process of putting out the fire that engulfed the Orita Aperin market. The reverse is the case, my people performed excellently well, those in the market and its surrounding can testify to this. The shops were made of combustible materials, the shops were made of plank. Of 50 of these shops, the fire service was able to contain the situation and only 8 shops were affected.  What was the situation ? The fire started at the centre of th market and we were able to curtail its spread, only 8 lock up shops were affected. Our quick intervention saved the situation. In the process of putting out the fire, the pump of the truck broke down and because of this we opted for buckets to put out the fire. I use this medium to appeal to newsmen to always contact the fire service in such a situation before publishing their reports. People can go to the market and see for themselves what we did, the whole market was constructed with combustible materials'', Mr. Adewuyi concluded.

In another development the people of the state have  expressed worry the state over the declining level of governance as a result of the freezing of the accounts of Ministiries Departmens and Agencies, just as they called on the state government to take urgent steps to address the situation.
